Description: Assessing and treating children with Selective Mutism (SM) is an often overwhelming and uncomfortable task. Even clinicians with years of experience find kids with SM to be challenging. Due to the prevalence of SM and it being nearly as common as Autism, a clinician can find this webinar helpful and applicable to daily practice. This webinar will delve into the role of the speech-language pathologist when assessing and treating children with SM. Utilizing a co-treatment model and the DIR/Floortime Model, will also be discussed. Through the use of visual media and case studies, participants will gain a better understanding of the Stages of Communication Comfort and how to use those Stages to develop a systematic treatment plan.
Learning Objectives: The learner will be able to: 1. Be able to clearly define the role of the OT and SLP in assessing and treating children with SM. 2. Describe the four Stages of Communication Comfort with regard to SM. 3. Be able to develop a thorough treatment plan based upon their evaluation of a child with SM. 4. Describe the process of co-treatment with other clinicians.
